Krikor Akoubian of Aquakor sat down recently with KHTS AM-1220’s Kyle Jellings to talk about the main kinds of hardwood and laminate flooring, benefits of each and the installation process.

Two primary types of hardwood floors are solid and engineered hardwood. Solid hardwood features a solid layer of wood from the top layer all the way to the bottom. However, engineered hardwood has a layer of plywood at the bottom, according to Akoubian.

“The most popular one would be the engineered because it’s more stable,” he said.

Laminate flooring won’t dent as easily as the more sensitive hardwood floors, and has a very similar look to engineered hardwood.

“On the hardwood floor you can buff it or you can refinish it,” Akoubian explained. “On the laminate there is no way to do that, because it’s a picture on top of the material.”

When it comes to installation, the staff of Aquakor can remove the existing floor, make the necessary repairs and lay down the new flooring.

Though hardwood must be glued or nailed down, laminate simply clicks together.

“It’s like a puzzle,” Akoubian said. “The only thing that holds the laminate is just the perimeter of the house, the base molding, because everything is floating.”
