It’s time to repair carpeting if wrinkles or open seams begin to appear, but replacement is necessary when the carpet is no longer cleanable or the padding is significantly worn down.

Akoubian recommends two-story houses use carpeting for upstairs bedrooms, hallways and the staircase, with hard surfaces like hardwood or laminate on the first floor.

“That will be very affordable and very effective,” he said.
